Jose Marin is a talented metalsmith from Spain who creates beautifully colored jewelry out of titanium, gold and silver that's inspired by nature. I was immediately drawn to his work because of the vibrant colors, textures and funk factor in each one.
Titanium jewelry has become a more popular metal for jewelry in part due to its ability to be colored easily. While gold or silver typically remain the same color, titanium can undergo a process called anodization.
Anodization involves heating or applying electricity to the titanium to release oxides from within it and change its color, which range from yellow, pink, or red to darker shades like blue or purple.
The wonderful shapes and combinations of colors in these pieces are so appealing.
Marin is intrigued with the fact that titanium is found in almost all living things: water, soils and rocks.
Marin was a finalist for the 2013 Premios Nacionales de Artesania (Spanish Annual Craftsmanship Awards) for his techniques with precious metals.
Here's a great quote that says it all: "At this time I have opted for titanium, a unique metal. Its hardness and toughness brings the challenge of making jewels by hand. Inspired by botanicals, and combining Titanium with gold, silver and semi-precious stones, I enjoy exploring new directions for contemporary jewelry with all the colors that nature provides." - Jose Marin
Right now, you can see Marin's work at Mobilia Gallery in Cambridge, Massachusetts through June 22, 2013.
